With Halloween right around the corner, it’s important to remind ourselves of the safety rules that protect our children and pets. According to the National Safety Council, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other time of the year. Here are safety reminders to help keep your family safe.

Tips for Treaters

  • A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds
  • If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you
  • Agree on a specific time children should return home
  • Teach your children to never enter a stranger’s home or car
  • Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends
  • Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home
  • All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant
  • Avoid masks, which can obstruct vision
  • If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks
  • When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is nontoxic and always test it in a small area first
  • Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation

Tips for Dog Owners

Be careful of candy around your pets, as some of it could be deadly for dogs. Besides chocolate, there’s also a new ingredient by the name of Xylitol that is added to some peanut butters and different types of candy and gum. Xylitol is estimated to be 100 times more toxic to dogs than chocolate! Tips for Non-Candy Treats

With all the unhealthy treats consumed on Halloween, here are some healthier options that kids will love while keeping your house from being toilet papered because you’re giving out apples! Plus, candy is crazy expensive!
