MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Popping fireworks is a popular tradition on the Fourth of July but for our furry friends, it can be a nightmare.

Dr. Leslie Williams at the Meridian Animal Clinic says many pets run away during the fourth because of stressful triggers caused by fireworks.

“I recommend that people keep their pets in a secure, safe area indoor if possible,” said Williams. “A fenced pen would be fine as well or even a crate would be the very best thing.”

Williams also said the clinic sees an influx of health problems around the fourth after pets become sick from eating barbecue.

“A lot of human food from barbecues… can be detrimental to our pets and cause a lot of illness from pancreatitis and GI obstructions,” said Williams.

Williams said Left over debris from Fourth of July celebrations should be cleaned promptly to avoid pets from ingesting dangerous chemicals.

Owners are encouraged to have current pictures and identification of pets, in the case that their pets wander away.
