Planning to enjoy the end of summer with a dog-friendly picnic and some cool treats? Nothing says summer like watermelon–and it’s also a dog favorite! Frozen watermelon dog treats and quick and easy to make–and you never need to get near the stove to make them.

We’ve got two EASY recipes here to create a taste of summer for your dog to enjoy!

Watermelon Dog Treats

This easy recipe–sent to us by Tails.com–combines watermelon with your dog’s favorite treats! I used liver treats (our dog’s favorite) for our dogs’ popsicles, but you can add your dog’s own fave goodies. All you’ll need is an ice tray!

Frozen Watermelon Dog Treats

This no-cook recipe is an easy way to turn leftover watermelon into a favorite dog treat!

Ingredients

• 1 cup watermelon
• 3-4 small dog treats

Instructions

1. Cut your deseeded watermelon into cubes. Do NOT use the watermelon rind.
2. Use a food processor, hand blender or the end of a rolling
   pin to blend the melon until smooth. You could add a little bit of
   water at this point if you want to make your batch stretch a little
   further!
3. Pour the mixture into your ice cube tray or mold.
4. Break up the dog treats into smaller pieces and add to the mix.
5. Pop into the freezer until done.

Serve as a refreshing dog treat on a hot summer’s day!

As with all treats, we recommend making sure they’re served as part of a balanced diet. (Treats should never make up more than 10 percent of your dog’s daily diet.)

Even though watermelon is quite low calorie, it does still contain fruit sugars so it’s best to keep it as an occasional treat.

Easy Watermelon Slushie for Dogs

Yesterday we were on the road all day, off to south Texas to assist two of John’s elderly relatives. Our three-hour drive took us through the town of Luling, one that’s known as the Watermelon Capital of Texas.

The farmers’ market, which operates downtown in this little oil town, had watermelons for sale–but all you have to do is look to the sky to see a real symbol of Luling: the town’s painted water tower, also known as the world’s largest watermelon.

The drive was a reminder that many dogs love plain watermelon slices. Be sure your dog doesn’t eat the seeds or rind but otherwise feel free to share your summer slice with him!

Watermelon Slush for Dogs

Ingredients

• 2 cups cubed watermelon
• ½ cup strawberries
• 1 tablespoon molasses
• ½ cup coconut water
• 1 cup ice

Instructions

1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and mix.
2. Serve in a bowl as a slushie treat or pour into a Kong® and freeze for long-lasting cooling fun.
